Jack-o-lantern smiles

Nocturnal predators such as vampires, werewolves, and creatures from spooky lagoons all need healthy teeth in order to feed upon the unwary, but many people who would like to dress up as these monsters consume way too much sugar during the Halloween season. Thankfully, keeping a few excellent oral health tips in mind can help you keep your fangs in biting shape for when it’s time to indulge in spooky fun. Here’s a quick guide to how you can avoid dental emergencies when enjoying Halloween.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is absolutely essential to life as we know it and provides a plethora of excellent oral health benefits. It is free from sugars and acids that can feed harmful oral bacteria and erode your dental enamel, and it also keeps the body hydrated enough for healthy saliva flow. To make the deal even better, drinking water helps dilute sugary residues and flushes food debris away from the mouth, which can significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay. Be sure water is your primary beverage and to drink plenty of it when enjoying candy and other Halloween sweets.

Practice Excellent Oral Hygiene

Your daily oral hygiene regimen is your first line of defense against the ghoulish oral bacteria that can infect your teeth and gums and cause a host of horrible dental health problems. To minimize their populations, be sure to stick to habits like:

  • Brushing: Brush your teeth using fluoridated toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day, once after waking up and once before going to bed. However, it’s ideal to also brush between meals as long as you wait at least thirty minutes after eating before doing so.
  • Flossing: Use dental floss to carefully clean between your teeth at least once a day, but it’s best to floss after meals and snacks.
  • Antibacterial mouthwash: This potion will kill multitudes of harmful oral bacteria and leave your breath fresh and minty. Be sure to follow the instructions printed on the label.

Don’t let nasty oral germs terrorize your teeth and gums. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand how to keep your teeth in great shape during the holiday season.
