January 2019 Newsletter
It’s official! 2019 is here and we’re incredibly excited to keep serving Spring Hill and the surrounding communities. Here’s to many more appointments and healthier mouths all around!
Every new year gives us a chance to consider what we’d like to improve about ourselves. For some it’s a better diet, a healthier sleep schedule, or simply more time with the family and less at work or on a smartphone. It can even be as simple as committing to a fully-realized oral care regimen.
With the new year in full swing, it’s actually the perfect time to start considering your oral health as well as your smile’s overall appearance. While biannual visits are necessary for everyone, some may also want to take advantage of our numerous cosmetic treatments to get their smile looking the way they’ve always wanted. To help you get started, here are a few ways you can kickstart your smile and oral health.
Scheduling routine checkups and cleanings at the beginning of the year is always the most proactive way to complete your oral care regimen. At-home brushing and flossing are essential between visits, but routine checkups help us confirm that your routine is sufficient and that no other underlying conditions are present.
But the new year is uniquely ideal for routine maintenance because it aligns well with the summer season. If you have children, scheduling now will only make it easier for you to make time for your kids’ cleanings and checkups when they’re on summer break. If you plan on taking time off work during the summer, getting your routine maintenance out of the way helps you avoid the winter rush.
Over the years, we’ve noticed that some of our patients have the tendency to miss their follow-up appointments. Whether it’s getting a filling or crown placed or periodontal maintenance, we want to do everything we can to avoid complications from appearing later. A cavity that’s treatable via a filling may require a full-blown dental crown if you skip your follow-up appointment. Gum disease that was once reversible may become permanent if not handled early.
If your intention is to spend less money and less time in the dental chair, getting these follow-up appointments taken care of is a great way to start 2019. According to chief economist and vice president of the American Dental Association’s Healthy Policy Institute, Marko Vujicic, emergency room dental visits costs totaled $1.9 billion. Most of these visits were for oral infections that could have been treated at a dental office. Staying proactive and visiting regularly can help you prevent this discomfort and keep more money in your pocket in the long-term.
Once you’ve handled all of your oral health needs, you may want to consider treatments that could provide you (or a family member) a much-needed boost in confidence and self-esteem. By choosing treatments that improve your smile’s appearance, such as teeth whitening, veneers, composite bonding, ClearCorrect, or gum recontouring/crown lengthening, you’re doing more than creating a more attractive smile.
Smiling has the power to temporarily lower your blood pressure, trigger endorphins from the brain, and reduce your stress levels. As a result, this puts you in a happier mood. If improving your mood wasn’t enough, consider how it can affect your relationships, whether they be social or professional.
Staying positive and promoting happiness can show others that you’re confident, reliable and productive. According to research conducted by Jessica Pryce-Jones and her company iOpener, happiness at work was highly correlated with greater productivity, energy and faster promotion. If your goal in 2019 is to get that new promotion or improve your current sales record, having a brilliant smile could make it even easier.
We hope that in 2019, patients of Family Dental Associates take the time to consider their oral health and smile.
