Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Schmitter always came from a family of healthcare providers. Even though there were three other dentists in her family, she never thought she would be one. She was originally a math major and wasn’t sure what she wanted to do professionally. It was during her senior year of college that her aunt (also a dentist) suggested she look at the dental field since it is a combination of medicine and art. On top of that, she learned she would get to talk to people all day long. After shadowing her childhood dentist, she knew immediately that this was where she was meant to be.
One of her favorite aspects of being a dentist is seeing the look on her patients’ faces when she’s helped them achieve their health and dental goals, whether they be cosmetic or helping them overcome dental disease. Seeing an immediate boost in their confidence has always been extremely rewarding to her.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After graduating with a BA in Mathematics, Dr. Schmitter enrolled into Middle Tennessee State University to take two years of the basic science courses she needed to apply to dental school. She would then earn her DDS from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, then complete an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. She’s also taken continuing education courses in CEREC (same-day crowns), Invisalign, porcelain veneers, cosmetic bonding, and a year-long course in biological dentistry.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
While Dr. Schmitter originally grew up in Columbia, she currently resides in Nolensville. She’s married to her high school sweetheart Jonathan and together they raise two daughters named Elizabeth and Kathleen. She also has one dog and two cats. In her free time, she enjoys painting, puzzles, playing the flute, and reading.
