Mini Dental Implants
In the past, replacing missing teeth used to mean only restoring those parts of the smile visible above the gum line. Then, dental implants came along, and over the past several decades, innovations in placement techniques, materials, and technologies have made these one of the most successful tooth replacement options with 95% or higher rates of success. However, there are still some patients who are unable to receive this beneficial tooth replacement option whether due to the cost, their health, or lack of supportive structure to ensure successful placement. For many patients, mini dental implants may be the answer to receiving affordable, long lasting dental restoration. If you’re interested in finding out more about mini dental implants, contact Family Dental Associates of Campbell Station to schedule a tooth replacement consultation with our Spring Hill dentist and team. We’ll evaluate your smile and help you find the best restoration option to meet your needs and fit your budget.
What are Mini Implants?
Mini implants are just what their name implies. They are dental implant posts made to be much smaller than traditional dental implants. This allows for more conservative placement, improved success rates, and immediate replacement tooth attachment.
When are Mini Implants Used?
We may recommend mini implants in a variety of situation. Some of common reasons patients choose mini implants include:
- Supporting smaller front replacement teeth that are better suited to support with mini implants
- Improving implantation success rates for patients with weakened immune systems or diminished bone density and gum tissue volume
- Helping patients fit the cost of implant supported tooth replacement into their budgets
What are the Benefits of Mini Implants?
There are numerous benefits to choosing mini implants rather than traditional implants, including:
- Faster healing time
- Improved implant placement success rates
- Immediate attachment of replacement teeth
- Lower cost compared with traditional implants
How are Mini Implants Placed?
Mini implants are placed in a similar surgical procedure to traditional implant placement, but the mini implant procedure is much less invasive. Traditional implants require the dentist to cut a flap in soft tissue, position the implant post, and place a healing cap. Then, patients waited several months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone before their replacement tooth could be attached. Mini implant placement is much more conservative. We simply drill a small hole into the jaw bone. Then, the implant is positioned and screwed into the jaw. With minimal damage to soft tissue and maximal implantation into the jawbone, we’re usually able to attach the replacement tooth or teeth on the same day we attach the implant post.
How Much do Mini Implants Cost?
The cost of mini implants is another reason why patients may want to consider this option for their implant restoration. A regular dental implant can cost anywhere between $500 to $2500 on its own without factoring in the cost of placement and restoration. The complete mini implant supported dental crown process typically only runs between $500 and $1500. These savings are even more apparent when replacing an entire row of teeth. A denture supported by regular implants can cost tens of thousands of dollars. However, the same dentures supported by four to six mini implants will only cost between $2000 and $5000 on average.
